I was very happy to move to Salem, great town by the water, young people migrating here in droves. The city of Salem has a lot going for it, even though some residents want to shut down live music but that is an other rant.
The one thing that really make me uncomfortable is our coal burning power plant. Coal is just bad for our health. It's in the air we breath, we are much more at risk for cancer living here (a 30 mile radius). The big thing about the plant it was planned to be shut down in 1982. It was only to be in service for 30 years, now 27 years later the plant is still burning. A couple of years ago 3 people lost their live in an explosion. Our Mayor has asked Gov. Devail Patrick to make Salem exempt from the new environmental standards because the plant is so old. The good thing about the plant is we get 4 million in taxes from the plant which helps out Salem, especially with the current economical crisis. It also employs 147 people.
So the hand which feeds also takes. Is money a fair trade for our health.
We are in a new age of energy.
The question now is what if.
